News General Jason Evans's take on the Commonwealth Invitational held in Scotland
October 3, 2013

The 8 Nations Commonwealth Invitation Championship took place in Scotland from 26th-31 August, this event involved the top 7 ranked nations in the World.

The preparation from the Scotland, Australia , England and New Zealand was incredible. Some nations arriving 2 weeks prior to the event with a full team consisting of 8 men and 8 ladies as well as nutritionists, psychologists, head coach and management. By the time the event got underway, they were certainly ready.

The most popular bowls used were Henselite and Taylors in size 4 medium weights. Medium weight was used so that it would run better on the heavier greens. The greens were consistent in speed ranging from 10.5 – 11.5 seconds on a full length green. The surroundings were absolutely magnificent and the tournament was run with machine like precision.

The Commonwealth Games in July 2014 will be without doubt a spectacular event as well. Hopefully, with the correct preparation, South Africa will excel there because SA bowls is blessed with a talent of outstanding bowlers that are as, or more skilled than other “bigger” nations. Going forward, preparation is key for the SA squad. Henselite Africa will be behind our S.A. Team all the way in 2014.

With regards to the results, hearty congratulations must go to Colleen Piketh who achieved a Silver medal in the Ladies Singles, narrowly losing to Natalie Melmore of England.

The Men’s Fours Team just missed a bronze by losing their game against Scotland.
